Any time there is a mosquito-borne illness outbreak in the news, Florida residents and visitors wonder whether the risk exists here.
Thanks to our hot, humid climate and swelling mosquito populations, it’s no wonder – we all wonder! Florida has not seen a confirmed locally acquire case of chikungunya since 2019. However, unlike other parts of the United States, which might not be so concerned, there is a bigger likelihood of reintroduction here in Florida.
Two prevalent carriers of chikungunya, the Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti, both call our sunny state home. Due to the extensive population of these mosquito species, we must be vigilant regarding various potential infections they can transmit.
Travel Concerns, Plan for Protection
The CDC issued a level two travel warning recently due to a chikungunya outbreak in China. The catalyst for the outbreak there is said to be monsoon floodwater that resulted in a population explosion of the Aedes mosquito culprits. There is a chikungunya vaccine available which might be recommended by your doctor ahead of travel to potential problem areas.
If you are traveling abroad, stay abreast of the latest potential for mosquito-borne illness transmission in the area you will be traveling to.
Be Aware of These Mosquito-Borne Illnesses in Florida Too
It’s hurricane season, and we’re no strangers to rainy weather here in the Jacksonville area. The potential for tropical storms is real right now. In addition to chikungunya, there are additional illnesses that we must also be aware of – and avoid contracting with ample mosquito control and personal protection. Florida mosquitoes are not letting up, nor should you!
